MEN'S GROOMING

The men’s skincare business is growing fast. Men are less afraid to show up at personal care counters for basics like shaving gel, moisturiser, and post-shave balm. But, predictably they don’t want the complication that women’s skincare thrives on. A compact line-up of products that do the job – that’s all men want.

FASCINATING FACTS FROM THE MALE SKINCARE MARKET

  • Much of the male's skincare still orbits around shaving, shaving gels and aftershave products.
  • The old ‘slap & burn’ type of aftershave is very bad for the skin. Some older men still need to be convinced of this. Modern aftershaves are mostly lotions that calm and moisturise – sometimes they have an SPF.
  • Men don’t think supermarket products are good for them anymore.
  • Men are also less inclined to borrow their wife’s products. They prefer having something designed for them.
  • Men like no-frills packaging.
  • Facial cleansers and soaps can often double as shaving cream.
  • Managers & high-ranking businessmen are investing more in anti-wrinkle products.
  • Men don’t want to look like they've had a hard night every day have discovered the benefits of eye gel.

WHY MEN SHOULDN'T USE WOMEN'S PRODUCT
A man’s skin is thicker, oilier, hairier & less likely to have problems with dryness, more likely to have problems with acne, oil slicks & ingrown hair. A man shaves the outermost layer of facial skin off his face every day, which leads to inflammatory reactions. Men’s skincare products are formulated with all these things in mind.

SMELLING GOOD
Fragrances offered to men today are much more interesting & subtle than the overwhelming, eye-stinging scents of 10 years ago. The effect today is more refreshing & more wearable for every day.
It’s interesting to note that when fragrances were first created, there were no labels for men or women. Men are now learning that fragrance isn’t something you splash onto your face after shaving, even if some are still called aftershaves.

SHAVING TIPS
There’s a right and a wrong way to shave with the traditional razor. Here’s the right way:

  • Always shave after or during a hot shower to soften and cleanse the beard.
  • Use a glycerine-based shaving cream or shaving soap that lathers with water.
  • When applying the lather always ensure a rich lather and try and work up the beard.
  • Use a good-quality blade with a well-balanced handle.
  • Always shave with the grain first. Going against the grain can cause ingrown hairs and razor burns. If you want a very close shave, relather and shave again lightly across or against the grain.
  • Avoid applying pressure with your razor.
  • If you cut yourself, apply a moist alum block to stop the bleeding.
  • Rinse your face with cold water.
  • Finish with an alcohol-free aftershave lotion or cream to moisturise and soothe the skin.
  • If you use a shaving brush, always ensure that you hang the brush upside down to dry.

TIPS FOR THE ELECTRIC SHAVER
If you use an electric razor, these golden rules still apply.

  • Have a shower before shaving to soften and cleanse the beard.
  • Shave with the grain. Going against the grain can cause ingrown hairs.
  • Avoid applying too much pressure with you razor.
  • Finish with an alcohol-free aftershave lotion or cream to moisturise and soothe the skin.
